meet the Artists

Em & Liz

I have always had a deep love of art and particularly drawing from an early age. Born in central London, I moved to Cornwall as a child with my family and quickly grew to love the great Cornish outdoors and all that this beautiful county has to offer. I take inspiration not only from the land and sea but also my immediate surroundings. I am very much an intuitive artist, I deeply value creative play and exploration in my work. Working with a wide variety of mediums I am passionate about ‘mark making’ and working organically with drawing.

I have a fascination not only with drawing, but also printmaking, collage and paint, my work is often a mix of media and will often take on an abstract form. Photography, textiles and music are all hugely important to me, all of which informs my work. Modern art and art history as well as contemporary artists both locally and globally are of great interest to me and discovering new art fills me with excitement.

As artists we are constantly seeking out new sources of inspiration. Seeing the world through a creative lens is a wonderful and essential part of living for any creative soul.

As the founder of Drawn Together Workshops, It brings me so much joy gathering people together to help explore our individual and collective creative energies. I know how hard it can be to find the space and time to tap into our creativity, it can also be costly and I wanted to offer workshops that are fun, affordable, creative and educational for all in a community setting, somewhere you can escape and be expressive, in an inclusive and intermate environment, here you can unleash some creative power at our workshops and potentially open up your own artistic pathway or breath new life into an already existing art practice. I believe drawing to be the fundamental foundation of any art practice and something we rarely do enough, even as established artists, or beginners.

I graduated in 2009 from University Wales Institute Cardiff with a degree Fine Art & Print Making, its been a huge goal of mine since then to establish my own art practice and eventually to help others kick start there own creative journey. Drawn Together Workshops is a project I am so excited about and I have big plans to offer more workshops in the future….. watch this arty space!

As with all creatives, my art journey is a process and forever evolving. As artists we always need to be constantly seeking new influence and follow a profound curiosity for life, how we respond to our experiences and surroundings is so intriguing to me. It can feel overwhelming when you are first starting out, growing in confidence with your art can take time and effort but is so rewarding and a critical part of personal development and creativity.

I hope you enjoy these workshops,

Emma

Liz Dickinson

Artist / art educator

Liz is a contemporary fine artist who first moved to Cornwall in 1995 from Northumberland with its open beauty and landscapes of contrast. The similarity of the coastline and large areas of moorland and ancient landscapes drew her to Cornwall along with its emense heritage of art and its landscape and light being a consistent inspiration for her work.

Being in Cornwall has given Liz a real connection with the artists that had already been an integral part of her art practice. Enthralled by mid 20th Century design and modernism; the art of Peter Lanyon, Karl Weschka, Paul Fieler, Sandra Blow and themes in 50/60’s design motifs; help structure her shapes and forms she sees repeatedly within her subject matter.

Walking on the beaches within the dominating structural landscapes, with her dogs who at times make an appearance in her work, she see these motifs and shapes in the rocks and tides that then become expressive methods of capturing the power and drama of the place. She also uses similar themes of pattern and texture in her Still Life work that captures elements from her everyday life and living environment….

Her art is an emotional response often playing with perspective that shifts to make the viewer question where the starting point is, this is intentional. Her work is underpinned by observation and through her use of intuitive drawings where she may make one line travel through the landscape or a series of expressive marks that gives her work energy. She describes her style as “abstracted” so in it lies the recognisable but interpreted rather than an exact response. At times she will shift viewpoints even mapping out the subjects and locations, almost as if from above….
